Motion from occlusion.

Vision uses specific image features or cues to infer physical properties of the world. Here, we use a novel illusion to show that occlusion, traditionally thought of as a cue to depth, is also a powerful cue to motion. A display of stacking disks that contains only occlusion as a cue to depth generates a vivid sense of movement that is likely computed in early or middle levels of visual process...

Objects and Occlusion from Motion Labeling

The problem of segmenting color video sequences is addressed. Boundary motion and occlusion relations expressed by labeling rules are argued to be of key importance for segmentation. Interframe motion of object(s) and background is approximated by a similarity or affine transforms. The computation proceeds in several steps: (1) color gradient edges are fuzzy-clustered according to their motion;...

Scene layout from ground contact, occlusion, and motion parallax

An important factor in determining perceived scene layout is optical contact between objects and the ground surface (‘‘ground contact’’). The relation between ground contact and occlusion was investigated in four experiments with stationary and motion parallax scenes containing a pole that occluded or was occluded by one or more cylinders. Some judgements were inconsistent with occlusion in sta...

Boundary segmentation from dynamic occlusion-based motion parallax.

Active observer movement results in retinal image motion that is highly dependent on the scene layout. This retinal motion, often called motion parallax, can yield significant information about the boundaries between objects and their relative depth differences. Previously we examined segmentation from shear-based motion parallax, which consists of only relative motion information. Here, we exa...

Computation of Motion and Occlusion Relation of Objects from the Motion of Their Boundaries

An original approach for motion segmentation using the movement of object boundaries is presented. Our treatment is focused on the case of two motions (background and foreground) and just two frames but can be extended to multiple motions and multiple frames. Segmentation results are presented and some shortcomings of the approach based on global motion models are discussed.
